Holguin Cubs Receive Flag for Elite League

The Holguin Cubs, who will play for the first time in the Cuban Baseball Elite League. Received their flag this Wednesday at the mausoleum in the Plaza de la Revolución Mayor General Calixto García Íñiguez.

The banner of Holguin sport was carried by former pitcher Rafael Castillo González. A Cuban Sports Legend, who handed it to Joel Queipo Ruíz, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in the province. Queipo Ruíz then passed it on to the team captain, Lázaro Cedeño.

Pitcher Carlos Alberto Santiesteban recited the athletes’ oath. Assuring them that they will fight to be among the top four in Cuban baseball. A position that eluded them in the 64th National Series. Also when they were eliminated in the quarterfinals.

The Holguin team will debut on Saturday, May 2nd (2:00 p.m.) at Julio Antonio Mella Stadium against the Las Tunas Lumberjacks.

For this first game, they could field Luis Vicente Mateo (2B), Leonel Moas Jr. (CF), Lázaro Cedeño (DH). Yasiel González (RF), Michel Gorguet (1B), Leonardo Montero (C). Edward Magaña (LF), Leonardo Alarcón (SS), and Ernesto Torres (3B).

Manager Lugdis Pineda announced that the starting pitchers for this opening game will rotate as follows: José Miguel Rodríguez, Rubén Rodríguez, Wilson Paredes, and Carlos Santiesteban.

After the game against Las Tunas, the Holguin team will travel to Matanzas to play at Victoria de Girón Stadium from May 7th to 10th. They will make their home debut on the 12th against Mayabeque.
