Blockade Against Cuba Affects Textile Industry in Holguin

The Inejiro Asanuma Spinning Mill (Gihilan) in the municipality of Gibara. The first link in the Cuban textile chain. It is facing disruptions to its production and sales cycle. Due to the restrictions of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States.

Duniet Bruceta Leyva, the mill’s general manager, told CNA that this hostile policy is the main obstacle to the factory’s progress. Gihilan manufactures carded and combed yarns. As it limits access to financing, supplies, and technology.

Adolfo Sarmiento Ramos, an investment specialist, explained that one of the biggest challenges lies in acquiring spare parts and electronic components. Since a large portion of these come from U.S. companies. Which compromises the maintenance and sustainability of the machinery.

The restrictions are causing temporary shutdowns in work areas. Delays in the arrival of supplies, and the search for suppliers in third countries to obtain essential components. Which increases transportation and logistics costs, she pointed out. Among the most affected is the importation of cotton fiber. So which impacts the production of yarn, the company’s main product, she noted.

Moreover the shortage directly affects productions of high human and social value. Such as the manufacture of surgical gauze for institutions of the Ministry of Public Health and the layette kits for pregnant women, she added.

Bruceta Leyva added that this situation also contributes to the instability of the electricity supply and the shortage of energy carriers. Factors that cause interruptions in the industrial flow and hinder the movement of workers and materials.

Also the manager highlighted that the company’s strength lies in its innovation policy focused on finding internal solutions. Including the refurbishment of forklifts through technical adaptations. The reactivation of the plastics workshop using recycled materials, and the launch of a workshop dedicated to casting lead parts.

Located in the coastal municipality of Gibara, the Inejiro Asanuma Spinning Mill has several specialized workshops. Including those for textile manufacturing and handicrafts. Designed to meet the needs of the local population. This work has earned the company the distinction of being a National Vanguard.
