Message from the Union of Historians of Cuba

The Union of Historians of Cuba issued a congratulatory message on the occasion of the celebration of Cuban Historian’s Day today, which we transmit below.

UNION OF HISTORIANS OF CUBAMESSAGE TO HISTORIANS FOR CUBAN HISTORIAN’S DAYOn July 1st, Cuban culture is in celebration as Cuban Historian’s Day is observed.

Then this date was chosen in honor of Dr. Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring a distinguished historian and promoter of the National Congresses of History – who on this date in 1935 received the title of Historian of Havana, whose work was continued by Dr. Eusebio Leal Spengler.

In the midst of campaigns of disinformation and distortion of the past and in the face of the threats that the world faces today from a fascist doctrine, engendered in the most reactionary circles of the extreme right in the United States and Europe. Which has intensified the blockade and the campaigns and pressures to overthrow the Historical Revolution science must provide all its wealth of knowledge to strengthen us ideologically, politically and culturally.

Futhermore for these reasons, we celebrate Historian’s Day in full creative, combative and committed activity with our history and our homeland. The central commemorative event is located in the province of Guantanamo, whose UNHIC branch has earned this recognition for the work carried out in recent years in various fields of the association’s activity.

The tribute event that began in Artemisa on June 17th, the 120th anniversary of the death of Generalissimo Máximo Gómez Báez, a brilliant military strategist who fought in the Liberation Army during the 19th-century independence wars, will culminate in Cienfuegos on July 31st, the fifth anniversary of the physical departure of historian Eusebio Leal Spengler.

Moreover our event is part of the commemoration of the 130th anniversary of the start of the Necessary War organized by José Martí and the 72nd anniversary of the actions of July 26th, 1953. We urge historians to continue accompanying us in the new challenges ahead in the research, teaching, and communication of history, and in the protection of heritage, along with the internal functioning of the association.

The culmination of the assemblies and provincial history events, the selection of presentations for the XXVI National History Congress to be held in Las Tunas from October 13th to 15th, the awarding of provincial history prizes, national recognition diplomas, and the corresponding UNHIC scholarships, the work of creation and improvement of history pages in ECURED, the progress on publishable versions of municipal histories, and the editorial and communication work on social networks are among the tasks being carried out during the event.

Also the Day of the Cuban Historian is an opportunity for tribute and recognition to our associates and all those who contribute to the knowledge and defense of history, continuators of the generations of Cubans who forged the nation and our nationality, who fought for independence and social justice and who bequeathed to us a free, sovereign, anti-imperialist, Martian, and Fidelista homeland.

Long live Cuban Historian Day!
Until victory always!
