Damage caused by earthquakes in Granma province

Partial collapses in houses and state facilities, as well as cracking of walls, falling electric poles and damage to stairs, are among the preliminary damages reported in the Cuban province of Granma after the occurrence of two earthquakes measuring 6.0 and 6.7 on the Richter scale, which shook a large part of the eastern region of the country on Sunday.

Yudelkis Ortiz Barceló, first secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba in Granma province, told NTV Dominical that so far no loss of human life or injuries have been reported as a result of these phenomena, although damage and needs assessment commissions have already been activated after receiving reports of damage to infrastructure in several municipalities.

She specified that due to the proximity to the epicenter of the earthquakes, it is estimated that the greatest damages are concentrated in the territories of Pilón and Bartolomé Masó, although there were also reports in Manzanillo, Buey Arriba, Guisa, Jiguaní, Media Luna, Niquero, Bayamo and Campechuela.

The leader also pointed out that several work commissions are already touring mountainous areas where landslides may occur as a result of these two phenomena or associated to possible aftershocks; at the same time, health personnel have been activated to attend to vulnerable and bedridden people who need to be assisted or transferred to safe places and hospital.During last night and until the early hours of this morning, a working commission sent by the country’s top leadership exchanged with authorities and residents, and verified part of the damage caused by the strong earthquakes this Sunday in several municipalities of the province of Granma.

Eduardo Martínez Díaz, Vice Prime Minister; Jorge Luis Broche Lorenzo, Member of the Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC); and Major General Ramón Pardo Guerra, Chief of the National General Staff of the Civil Defense, headed the delegation that went to Campechuela, Media Luna and Pilón.

So far, three total landslides and more than 200 partial damages have been identified in Pilón, while no deaths have been reported and two people have been injured: a five year old minor and a 48 year old woman.

Damages include breakdowns in main lines and transformers, fallen poles and other damages to the electric system, as a result of which more than 12,000 customers, mostly in Pilón, Bartolomé Masó and Yara, suffered loss of service.
