Major General Calixto Garcia honored in Holguin

The people of Holguin honored this Sunday Calixto Garcia Iniguez, the General of the Three Wars or the Holguin Lion, who preferred to die rather than fall into the hands of enemy forces, which is a source of pride for those of us who were born in this region of eastern Cuba.

The solemnity of the square that bears his name hosted the eternal tribute to the 185th anniversary of the Major General’s birth. Joel Queipo Ruiz, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and First Secretary of the Provincial Committee  in Holguin, the Governor Manuel Hernandez Aguilera, among other guests, attended the political and cultural evening.

The moment was opportune so that to the staff of the Revolution Square of Holguin were donated photographs that gather great part of the history of this emblematic site of Holguin.

Another special moment was the awarding of the radio contest “Calixto in today’s Holguin”, also sponsored by the Monument Complex.

Calixto Garcia was born on August 4, 1839 in San Diego Street (current Miro Street), in the city of Holguin. He participated in the Ten Years’ War, the Chiquita War (little war) and the Necessary War, for which he is considered one of the main strategists of the Cuban wars of independence.

With these words, José Martí summed up Calixto: “He needs no praise. He carries his history on his wounded forehead. He who knows how to scorn his life will always know how to honor it”.

On her part, Doña Lucía Íñiguez, before the terrible news of the Major General’s death, which came in the voice of a Spanish soldier, said: “That is my son Calixto, dead rather than surrendered”.
