Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel will attend for the first time an expanded meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council, which will take place on May 8, Russian Presidential Advisor Yuri Ushakov said on Tuesday.

“Regarding Cuba, I mentioned that (the president of Cuba) will participate as an observer in a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council. By the way, this will be the first time that he attends the Council in person. Before that, he had always joined via video conference or sent a video message,” Ushakov told reporters.

The advisor recalled that Cuba has been an observer in the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) since 2020. “I would especially like to point out that Cuba is the only EEU partner outside the region with such a status,” he added.

Ushakov pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin will met his Cuban counterpart to review bilateral ties in all fields, including politics, diplomacy and economic cooperation. “It will be an important conversation, in a reduced format first, and then expanded,” he said.

The EEU is an economic alliance that unites Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Russia, for a total population of some 184 million people and a gross domestic product (GDP) of 1.9 trillion dollars.

The Supreme Eurasian Economic Council brings together the heads of State and Government of the EEU.

Díaz-Canel will also attend the Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9, along with the leaders of Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Laos and Guinea Bissau, Ushakov said.

The Cuban president previously announced on X that he would begin a working visit to Russia to address the priorities on the bilateral agenda, after the Vladimir Putin’s reelection.

He noted that he would participate in the meeting of the Supreme Council of the Eurasian Economic Union in the context of the 64th anniversary of the reestablishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Cuba and the 79th anniversary of the victory in the Great Patriotic War.
