Holguin chess players grab bronze medals in Capablanca tourney

Patrick Randy Macfarlane and Dairenis Guerrero Almaguer from Holguin finished third in the event for children under 16 of “Buscando un Capablanca” (Looking for a Capablanca) chess tournament, which concluded this Monday in Havana.

Among the boys, Patrick totaled 6.5 points out of a possible eight and finished equal to Derek Gonzalez from Villa Clara, but the latter was second by best tiebreaker in a group dominated by Felipe Herrera from Camagüey (7.0 units).

To define the champion among the girls of the U-16 “Looking for a Capablanca”, the Buchholz system was used, since all those who reached the podium accumulated 5.5 points.

In this way, from first to third place were placed, in this order, Liennys Ferrer from Matanzas, Mariam Cárdenas from Villaclare and Dairenis Guerrero from Holguín.

Meanwhile, in the “Open”, played at the Habana Libre Hotel, Grand Master (GM) Reinier Vazquez of Holguin reached a draw with his counterpart Sergio Barrientos of Colombia and with 3.5 points shares the third to 15th places, but is ninth by tiebreaker.

Another Holguin player was International Master (IM) Ríder Díaz, who appears among those 13 players after his victory in the fourth round at the expense of his peer Pedro Morales and is placed twelfth.

With a considerable increase in his Elo, some 52 points, Héctor Luis Fuentes de Feria from Holguín, who reached 3.0 points after his success over FIDE Master (FM) Ariel Pulido, is in 17th place. Further behind is IM Manuel Darío Ochoa, in 94th place with 1.5.
