May Day celebrations in communities of Holguin province

The big parade for the International Workers’ Day is hours away, but already towns and communities of Holguin have held rallies and activities for the date, tinged with the peculiarities of each place.

Roads and small squares of the eastern province have witnessed the celebrations for the World Day of the Proletariat, which have been characterized by local initiatives, decorations and much union enthusiasm.

According to Yanara Guerrero Batista, member of the Provincial Secretariat of the Cuban Workers’ Confederation (CTC for its Spanish acronym), 38 rallies and parades have been held so far, in which more than 49 thousand workers and their families have participated.

Among the activities carried out throughout the province of Holguin, there were carnival-like plenaries in the municipality of Moa; union assaults on labor communities to promote production challenges; and artistic presentations with emulative challenges in Gibara.

Until April 30, the celebrations in the communities will continue until the completion of 56 events and parades in the eastern territory.

More than 150 thousand people from Holguin are summoned to the May Day parade in the provincial capital city. This is a date of rejoicing for the workers’ movement and a tribute to those who fought for labor rights.

The activities for the event will be a tribute to the legacy of union leaders such as Lázaro Peña, Jesús Menéndez, Aracelio Iglesias, Armando Mestre and Alfredo López, together with this year’s commemorations of the 65th anniversary of the triumph of the Revolution, the 171st anniversary of José Martí’s birth and the 85th anniversary of the founding of the CTC.
