Celebrated in Holguin the 63rd Anniversary of the Eastern Army

The Eastern Army (EO) of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, which protects the territories of Camagüey, Las Tunas, Holguín, Granma, Santiago de Cuba and Guantánamo celebrated today the 63rd anniversary of its foundation and commemoration of Playa Girón heroic deed.

In a letter sent to the combatants by the Minister of the Revolutionary Armed Forces, Army Corps General Alvaro Lopez Miera, he expressed the importance of the creation at a relevant moment in the history of Cuba after the first triumph over the Yankee enemy in Latin America, and expressed his respect to the heroes and martyrs for their perennial commitment to the homeland.

The worth of the men and women who dedicate their lives to the defense of this historic territory is unquestionable and this is reflected in their results in fulfilling the tasks and missions entrusted to them, which has earned them the trust of the highest leadership of the country, said Lopez Miera in the letter.

Brigadier General José Luis Espinosa Rodríguez, second in command of the General Staff and chief of Operations of the EO, pointed out in the main words of the meeting that they continue in defense of the revolutionary work achieved after the First of January 1959, by dedicating time in the forging of values and convictions and by raising the cultural heritage of their combatants.

One of the current missions of the troops is to collaborate with the people in food production or in supporting the most vulnerable ones, in order to preserve the conquests without neglecting for a second the protection of the nation, he added.

Representatives of the six military regions attended the political and cultural event held at Eddy Suñol Theater in Holguin, where they recognized the decades of dedication of the combatant command and distinguished its founding veterans.

Major General Eugenio Rabilero Aguilera, chief of the Eastern Army; Ernesto Santiesteban Velázquez, member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and first secretary in the province; Manuel Francisco Hernández Aguilera, governor of Holguín, together with political and governmental authorities and main military chiefs of the five eastern provinces and Camagüey presided over the commemoration gala.

On April 21, 1961, two days after the victory at Playa Girón, then Commander Raúl Castro Ruz founded the so-called Señor Ejército, the second of its kind in Cuba, which together with the Western and Central armies shares the country’s defense system.
