Artists address importance of community work in Holguin

The importance of community work and the shortcomings of economic issues faced by creators in the current context were some of the topics discussed on Thursday at the 10th Congress of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (Uneac) in Holguin.

Liset Martínez Luzardo, deputy minister of Culture, stressed the importance of the arrival of creators to the communities and neighborhoods, since they constitute a decisive pillar for transformations to take place, so it is necessary to create brigades in all provinces to promote the development of art expressions in every corner of the country.

To the Tenth Congress (Uneac) we must come up with concrete proposals to face with results and efficiency the cultural colonization, we must exercise our role in the control of the policy, since there is no conquest in the sector that has not been promoted by Uneac and that has to be supported, he underlined.

In the reading of the main report, Néstor Salazar, radio broadcaster and member of the organization, reaffirmed the willingness of the membership to remain active, since the five branches have more than 260 members who continue their work by organizing events in collaboration with various institutions.

Also recognized as deficiencies were the need to forge alliances with the University of Holguin, the Hermanos Saiz Association, the connections between Culture and Tourism, and the insufficiency of thought forums to activate the theoretical feedback of members and leaders.

Orestes Saavedra, director of the Holguin Symphony Orchestra, stated that the role of the association must achieve binding agreements in function of Culture and raised the issue of the back payments of the Music and Shows Company, a problem that would be solved with the electronic collection.

Regarding the positioning of artistic education in the province as a subsidiary and not as a teaching unit, Isabel Granados, rector of the University of the Arts in the territory, also proposed a salary increase for teachers at the higher level, since they do not have a resolution to support them.

Eliel Gómez, president of the José Martí Cultural Society, highlighted the thought events that were achieved with the Aponte Commission, which had quality and depth through the treatment and debate of the roots and identity from the Cuban culture.

In addition, during the meeting the members of the provincial committee were elected and Eliel Gómez was chosen as the new president of the Holguin branch of Uneac.

The assembly was also attended by Martha Bonet, president of Uneac, Magda Resik, vice-president of the organization, Manuel Hernández Aguilera, governor of Holguín, and other political and government authorities in the territory.
