Architects in Holguin celebrate their National Day

March 13 is remembered as the Day of the Architect in Cuba because on that date, in 1916, the College of Architects of Havana was constituted and in December 1935, during the National Assembly of Architects, held at the Government Palace in the city of Matanzas, it was decided to establish the occasion to pay tribute to this professional in the Caribbean bation.

Likewise, on that day but in 1957, the assault to the Presidential Palace and the taking of Radio Reloj were carried out, with the participation of young people of the Revolutionary Directory and the Federation of University Students (FEU), headed by their leader, Jose Antonio Echeverria, student of Architecture and president of this organization, who was killed in acction at one of the sides of the University of Havana.

In the province of Holguin the homage contemplates several activities, according to Ms.C. Architect Sila Amalia Sanchez de Gonzalez Machado, president of the Society of Architecture of the UNAICC (National Union of Architects and Construction Engineers of Cuba).

This Wednesday morning at the University of Holguin (Uho), members of the Society’s executive, together with students of the Faculty of Construction, will place a wreath at the statue that perpetuates the memory of Jose Antonio Echeverria.

At the same time, another representation of architects from Vértice (Engineering and Architecture Services Company), Arcom (Community Architects) and IPROYAZ (Sugar Industry Projects Company), will place a wreath at the Holguín Cemetery at the tomb of the illustrious Holguín architect Luis Felipe Rodríguez Columbié, who was the first president of the UNAICC here, and winner of the National Life and Work of Architecture Award.

The ceremony will be held at the UNAICC headquarters, where the Provincial Life and Work Award will be presented to MsC Architect Raúl Figueredo Reyes, and a recognition to national nominee Óscar Bellido.

As is traditional, the presentation of certificates to a group of architects with five, 10, 15, 20, 25, 40 and even 50 years of graduation will be formalized.

The celebration includes the presentation of awards to four top professionals, Yoanis Pupo Guerra, from VERTICE, Lourdes Labernia Piñero from Arcom (architects of the Community), Elizabeth Pintado Aguilera and Rosa Villafruela Fernández from Mintur Real Estate.

The event includes a talk on the 30th anniversary of ARCOM and the 20th anniversary of Vértice, as well as the presentation of the magazine “Ciudad Parque” in digital format.

The activities will conclude on March 19 with the First Theoretical Event of Young Recent Graduates with the presentation and discussion of the theses of completion of the Architecture degree.
