The squad of Holguin Cachorros is one of the five undefeated teams in the start of the 63rd National Baseball Series.

This Sunday, the pupils of Lugdis Pineda, after enjoying a wide 7×2 advantage in the first five innings, had to fight from the bottom in the last innings of the game, defined by Edward Magaña’s golden hit to leave the Leopards of Villa Clara lying on the grass with a 10×9 score.

In summary, Holguin players produced 15 hits, six of them two run base, one triple and one home run, and once again made no error, while their rivals went with 12 hits and failed twice in the defense.

The victory went to reliever José Antonio Sánchez, who in one and one-third innings did not allow a hit and struck out two, but gave away two tickets and hit a ball. Randy Cueto took the setback.

Holguín starter Jesús Enrique Pérez allowed four earned runs in five and a third innings, in which his rivals produced seven hits, and also struck out three men but walked one batsman.

Ineffective was roockie reliever Jesús Quintán, who faced two batters and was hit by Mailon Alonso’s single and home run, as well as Luis Cáser, who allowed three earned runs in one and a third innings, and left-hander Dairían Batista, who struck out the only batter he faced.

Rookie Cristian Onofre had another great day, hitting 3-5 with his second home run and two runs batted in, now 9-6, while Ernesto Torres that went 4-5 with a pair of homers and a triple, and Yordan Manduley that went 2-4 with a double and two runs batted in.

On Saturday, Holguín defeated Villa Clara 5×1 with an offense of 10 hits for five against their rivals who failed three times on defense.

Wilson Paredes was the winner with a praiseworthy clean opening in six innings in which he allowed four hits, struck out three and walked one man. The best offensive support came from Onofre (3-4) with a home run.

The other four teams that achieved double victories on Saturday and Sunday were Industriales over Isla de la Juventud, Sancti Spíritus against Cienfuegos, Ciego de Ávila versus Camagüey and Pinar del Río over Artemisa.

The matches between Granma-Las Tunas, Santiago de Cuba-Guantanamo and Matanzas-Mayabeque were all tied at one win.

From Tuesday 12 to Sunday 17, with a break on Friday, the Cachorros from Holguin will host the Tigers of Ciego de Avila at Mayor General Calixto Garcia stadium.
