Resilient agriculture techniques promoted in Holguín

The creation of forest farms is one of the initiatives of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma) in the province of Holguin aimed at promoting resilient agriculture, included in the objectives of Tarea Vida (Life Task) to confront climate change.

This strategy includes the use of ecological products, sustainable technological packages and the introduction of irrigation systems with renewable energy sources, in addition to providing new employment options.

Alejandro Torres Gómez de Cádiz Hernández, territorial delegate of Citma, emphasized that these areas take into account the characteristics of the ecosystem, the application of measures for soil conservation and the increase in crop yields based on sustainable development.

He specified that the farms also prioritize the study of the impact of intense drought and other phenomena to, through science and technological innovation, reverse their negative effects on food production.

He pointed out that more than 100 farmers have been encouraged for their good practices in these plots, especially in the municipalities of Banes, Rafael Freyre and the mountain territories from the state Turquino Plan, prioritized in Cuban government programs.

In addition, community activities, the maintenance of waste treatment systems and the rehabilitation of forested areas affected by mining in mountainous areas are also highlighted, said the executive.

As part of the programs aimed at developing resilient agriculture, a project is also being promoted in the municipality of Urbano Noris to train producers in the planting of animal feed and livestock.

For more than five years, Tarea Vida has been promoting protection in more than 70 coastal municipalities in Cuba, including the reorganization of housing and the improvement of the population’s quality of life.
