Fidel’s first speech to the people of Holguín remembered

Fidel Castro’s first speech to the people of Holguín, on the 26th of February 1959, from the balconies of the former Government House, now La Periquera Provincial History Museum, was remembered in this eastern Cuban city.

A crowd, concentrated around the Parque Mayor General Calixto García, accompanied – at that time – the leader of the Cuban Revolution, eager to know the projections of the nascent process, focused on the benefits to the most humble sectors.

In the midst of a difficult historical context of the Revolution, marked by contradictions and where the eastern region had the highest rates of illiteracy, infant mortality, malnutrition and poverty, Fidel offered hope for a better future for the working class, said to ACN Víctor Aguilera Nonell, researcher and vice president of the branch of the Union of Historians of Cuba (UNHIC) in the territory.

During the dialogue, already as Prime Minister, he promised the inhabitants to create institutions to guarantee access to health, education, culture, social justice, materialized in the following years with the Vladimir Ilich Lenin University Teaching Hospital and the Sugar Cane Combine Factory 60th Anniversary of the October Revolution, the scholar pointed out.

Many ideas related to government plans, characterized by a direct contact with the masses and a constant interest in the problems of the working class, women and children, were shared by the revolutionary leader, in addition to his interest in the opportunities for self-improvement.

This speech marked a before and after in the history of eastern Cuba, since it summarized the economic and social reality of the region, with serious problems accumulated over years of neglect by the rulers in power.

During the day, on the occasion of this anniversary, a program of recreational activities will be carried out with the participation of Culture, Health, Education, among other sectors.
