Based on the potentialities present in Cuban universities in the search for solutions to phenomena such as climate change and health or environmental disasters, on June 6, 2023, the Transdisciplinary Chair Una sola salud (One Health), belonging to the University of Medical Sciences of Holguin (UCMHo), was created with the aim of contributing, among other purposes, to the approach of a single health model.
According to the president of this Chair, Dr. María de los Ángeles Salermo Reyes, alliances are currently being made with institutions such as the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment (Citma); the Meteorology Center; Civil Defense; the Government and other institutions.
She added that this Chair includes among its projections training opportunities for human resources from different social sectors.
The assistant researcher explained that they are working to insert the One Health approach in the different master’s degrees, specialties, courses and workshops that are taught.
In this regard, the academician added that they completed a diploma course on climate change which made possible the integration of different institutions at the provincial level.
The Chair seeks to develop strategies for alliances and knowledge transfer through courses and workshops, by generating human talent through activities in the different institutions.
It intends to promote educational policies in the educational centers and to develop studies of danger, vulnerability and risk of sanitary disasters in the province of Holguin.
To this end, she specified that there is a project approved in alliance with the Institute of Geophysics that allows the implementation of strategies, the creation of audiovisual media and academic innovation, which enhances local development towards the different communities of the territory.
Among the main results of Una sola salud stands out the design of a methodology for hazard, vulnerability and risk studies in the province and the foundation of an academic scientific observatory on climate change.
UCMHo in addition to this chair maintains a recognized work in others and in the development of community projects that contribute to local development, and has an active participation in the search for solutions to the main social problems, in order to promote sustainable development and innovation.
