The province of Holguin perfects the attention to the elderly through a wide program to improve the quality of life of this vulnerable group and to treat the indexes of population aging as a top priority problem.

The eastern territory, shows one of the highest numbers of this indicator and among the most affected municipalities stand out Gibara, Banes, Báguano and Mayarí, with more than 20 percent of its population over 65 years old.

He pointed out that the province has more than 800 places in grandparents’ homes and homes for the elderly, which offer the possibility of care and rehabilitation for those with physical and motor disabilities.

He also mentioned that there are around 1,200 grandparents’ circles distributed in the 14 municipalities and that more than 96,000 senior citizens have been incorporated to exercise routines and healthy recreational activities.

At the same time, maintenance and repair actions are being carried out in homes for the elderly, grandparents’ homes and other facilities dedicated to the care of these groups, said the director.

Holguin also has a demographic observatory where the aging population is studied as one of the variables for the socioeconomic development of the province, the third most densely populated in Cuba.
