Holguin achieves third lowest infant mortality rate in Cuba

Holguín closed 2023 with the third lowest infant mortality rate in the country, as well as below the national average, at 4.7 per 100,000 live births.

The municipalities of Antilla and “Calixto García” reported no deaths last year, while seven others maintained this indicator below the provincial rate: Gibara (1.82), Sagua de Tánamo (2.07), Báguanos (2.08), Mayarí (2.84), Holguín (3.92), “Frank País” (3.98) and “Rafael Freyre” (4.31).

The province had 8,877 births, 202 less in relation to 2022, and, according to directors of the Maternal and Infant Care Program (Pami), the months of August, September and November were those with the highest birth rates.

In one of the most complex years for the country, due to the economic situation and the tightening of the blockade that the U.S. government has maintained for more than six decades against our people, it is a heroic achievement to have ended 2023 with a rate of 4.7 per 1,000 live births, in one of the most populated and extensive provinces in Cuba.

It is worth acknowledging those who run the Pami in the territory and especially the doctors, nurses and other primary health care personnel in the 14 municipalities, and, undoubtedly, to the provincial hospitals and particularly the “Vladimir Ilich Lenin”, where 6,749 children were born, with an infant mortality rate of 2.7.

From this center we also congratulate the Neonatology Ward, perinatology, delivery room and other maternity services, as well as the Intensive Care Unit, where 6,749 children were born, with an infant mortality rate of 2.7. the Intensive Care Unit.

Applause as well for Octavio de la Concepción de la Pedraja pediatric hospital, center with territorial coverage in neonatal surgery and other specialties.

The World Health Organization recognizes the reduction of infant mortality as one of the fundamental milestones to increase reproductive efficiency, which is why in Cuba, in spite of exhibiting low indicators, a comprehensive strategy is adopted, from the beginning of pregnancy, aimed at reducing the risk of fetal and maternal death.

These projects include intersectoriality for transport, the work of maternal homes, and the the work of maternity homes, the feeding of pregnant women, clinical and genetic follow-up, among other items prioritized by the Ministry of Public Health.
