New tools for agriculture in Holguín

With the introduction of new tools and implements, the World Food Program benefits several production units from the municipality of Urbano Noris, in the province of Holguin, as part of the project “Act differently! which seeks to promote sustainable agriculture.

Ruber Peña Fleita, representative of the program and specialist of the Agricultural Extension, Research and Training Unit (UEICA) in the territory told the ACN that in order to comply with the strengthening the link between producers and social protection networks, tools were donated to those entities to facilitate and and improve their work.

The investments include eight motorized cultivators and an eight motorized backpacks, tool modules and training materials, and resources to equip an adjoining classroom that benefits 12 farmers, four cooperative farms, four Credit and Service Cooperatives, an Urban Farm, the Municipal University Center and the Agricultural Business Unit, as well as the UEICA in Gibara, he said.

Peña Fleita explained that, since its implementation in 2013, the project has gone through several phases in which the value chain of beans, orchards and other vegetables, capable of supporting local food systems in the face of natural disasters and climate change, and ensuring the diet of vulnerable population groups with more nutritious and safer food.

At present, these production units contribute to three canteens of the Family Care System, eight educational centers including semi-boarding schools, special schools and day care centers, as well as a maternity ward, which meet specific demands, planned in advance and sold at a fair price, he added.

The Act Differently! project, financed by the Korean Development Agency (Koica) through the WFP, provides direct assistance to nearly nine thousand people in one municipality in each of the five eastern provinces where it is being developed, and responds effectively to the national policy that promotes food sovereignty.
