University of Holguin: 55 years of science

The largest house of higher studies in the province, the University of Holguin (UHo), celebrates this November 4th fifty five years dedicated to the formation of new professionals and to the economic and social development of the country from science and innovation.

More than 76 thousand graduates in exact sciences, economy, technical studies, pedagogy, agriculture, livestock, legal studies, physical culture, social and humanistic sciences have passed through the classrooms of this Alma Mater, which besides offering a broad undergraduate training, gives the possibility to its graduates to continue studies in master’s and doctorate programs.

Meanwhile, the extension activity makes that in the four campuses: Oscar Lucero, José de la Luz y Caballero, Manuel Fajardo and Celia Sánchez, there is no lack of cultural activity, with the leading role of the Movement of Amateur Artists of the Federation of University Students (FEU), which has given so many awards in national competitions to the institution.

In the most difficult stage of the confrontation with Covid-19, as a sign of its humanist spirit, the university in Holguin turned its residences into field hospitals, where workers and students collaborated in the care of patients.

After overcoming this complex task, scientific activity continues, proof of which is the permanent commitment to events that position it internationally as a “space for growth”, among them, its International Scientific Conference and the Conference on Foreign Languages, Communication and Culture, known as WEFLA.

But it also hosts the National University Radio Festival, organized biannually by the University Student Federation, and Apunto National Meeting of Journalism Students, both initiatives born from its students.

As it commemorates half a century and a lustrum, the now integrated University of Holguin zealously keeps a rich educational and scientific tradition inherited from the then “Oscar Lucero Moya” University, the “José de la Luz y Caballero” Higher Pedagogical Institute and the “Manuel Fajardo” Faculty of Physical Culture and Sports, which merged since 2015.
