Holguin Cisat implements project to face climate change

The Center for Research and Environmental Services (Cisat) implements within the Territorial Program of Science, Technology and Innovation the project “Adaptation to climate change based on ecosystems for the management of protected coastal areas in the province of Holguin“.

Cisat’s project aims at mitigating the deterioration of biodiversity and ecosystem services in protected coastal areas with the consequent increase of resilience and reduction of social and environmental vulnerabilities to the impacts of Climate Change.

This project is being implemented in Bahía de Naranjo, in the municipality of Rafael Freyre, and is in its first stage of application in which work is being done to establish the baseline, while waiting for the zone to be approved as a protected area of national significance, according to Antonio Vega Torres, head of the project.

Once this step is completed, the objective is to generate updated information that will serve as input for decision-makers, based on the management and adaptation of ecosystems that have high natural values of flora and fauna, in addition to valuing ecosystem services (benefits that humans obtain from the proper functioning of ecosystems).

The second stage of Cisat’s project begins once these services are identified, prioritized and economically valued for their correct management and use; In the final phase, the area’s vulnerabilities to the effects of Climate Change will be identified and actions will be proposed to mitigate them.

Bahía Naranjo was selected for the application of this project because it is a tourist area that has native flora and fauna, in addition to being a corridor for migratory birds with important biotic values to conserve.
