Sagua de Tánamo about to reach the provincial baseball finals

With a double victory for the Cafetaleros of Sagua de Tánamo over the Piratas de Gibara and one win apiece between Alegres of Mayarí and Sultanes of Holguín, the first day of the semifinal of the XLVI Provincial Baseball Series in Holguín concluded.

The large crowd gathered at José Abreu stadium enjoyed the two shutouts that Cafetaleros of Sagua gave to Piratas of Gibara.

Neudis Llorente limited the offense of the Gibara Pirates to four hits, while his teammates, with five hits, scored three in an errorless game. The setback went to Luis Chacón.

For the winners, who are one win away from the final, Yorlis Bravo, (1-2), and Miley Castillo,( 1-3), each with an RBI, were the offensive standouts.

At the end of the game, Daniel Espinosa was in charge of keeping the Pirates at bay with four hits, while the locals, with 10 hit, scored seven hits and made a single error, as did their rivals. Veteran Jailer Montada was the unlucky one.

Once again, Yorlis Bravo (1-2) and Luis Raúl Domínguez (3-3 and one run batted in) stood out for the team of Sagua de Tanamo.

In the first game at Feliú Leyva ballpark, defending champion Sultanes of Holguín relied on an accurate six-inning performance by Jesús Quintán to secure a 4×0 victory. The loss went to Wilfredo Almenares.

The defeated team only managed to hit three hits and make no erors, while the winners failed twice on the defense, but the eight hits did the job, with Richard Oliva and Luis Miguel Santiesteban, both (2-3) with one run batted in, standing out.

Then the team of Mayari rose and grabbed the win (4×1), with an outstanding performance by veteran pitcher Enrique Machado, supported by six hits, four of them by Luis Lawrence, (2-3), and Osvel Sosa, (2-2) with one run batted in.

The setback went to José Manuel Rivas, although his teammates had seven hits but committed four errors. Richard Oliva, (2-2), and Edilse Silva, (2-3), were outstanding men in the losing cause for the locals.

The semifinal stage of the domestic baseball tournament in Holguin, a best-of-two series, will continue with another doubleheader on Monday 11, when the Alegres host the Sultanes at the Emilio Gomez Bermudez stadium, and the Piratas host the Cafetaleros at the Jorge Martin Magariño stadium in called Villa Blanca of Gibara.

Should both semifinal series end on Monday, then the final, also a best-of-five best-of-three series, will start on Thursday 14, otherwise it will begin on Saturday 16.
