Holguín develops ferrobus transportation services

The province of Holguín is improving its ferrobus transportation by incorporating new vehicles and opening new routes to facilitate the transport of passengers to rural communities that are difficult to access.

Wilmer García Ramírez, director of the Provincial Transportation Company, told ACN that they currently have 13 Diana and Yutong buses, converted into ferrobuses to cover 20 routes in complex topographies of the territory.

This service, the executive added, will continue to expand with the arrival of four vehicles that are being adapted in workshops in Santiago de Cuba, and one more in Guatemala, municipality of Mayarí, to cover unattended routes.

So far, seven of Holguin’s 14 municipalities benefit from the ferrobuses, among them Rafael Freyre, Cueto, Mayarí, Frank País, Báguanos and Cacocum, he said.

The latter operates services to the municipal capital from the settlements of La Rufina, San Blas and Arroyo Blanco, with intermediate connections to the central Cristino Naranjo, and a new route between Cacocum and Mir is currently being tested, he said.

García Ramírez added that, in the municipality of Frank País, one of the most difficult routes will be inaugurated due to the narrowgauge tracks from Camaronera to Cebolla Seis, with the ultimate goal of reaching Cebolla Ocho, the farthest community.

He also explained that work is being done on the design of trailers for the ferrobuses, to increase their capacity to carry goods, especially food of the basic standard basket of goods for residents in isolated communities, as well as local agricultural and livestock productions.

The ferrobus transportation service is a project led by the Ministry of Transportation, the Union of Railroads and the provincial governments to modernize railroads to facilitate passenger flows to rural areas, where Holguín is making progress in improving its routes and equipment.
