High temperature values have persisted in Cuba, as it happened on the afternoon of July 12th, when the maximum temperature record were broken for the second straight day at two weather stations. In addition, 27 stations have reported the top temperatures equal to or above 35 degrees Celsius.
The new records were:
37.4°C, Guantánamo, Caujerí Valley.
36.7°C, Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos
36.5°C, San Juan y Martínez, Pinar del Río
36.4°C, Güira de Melena, Artemisa
35.2°C, Tapaste, Mayabeque
33.8°C, Pinares de Mayarí, Holguín
The day before that date, three meteorological stations had also confirmed maximum temperature records: in Aguada de Pasajeros, Cienfuegos, 36.7 ºC was reported, while the station in Güira de Melena, Artemisa, recorded 36.2 ºC, and in Pinares de Mayarí, Holguín, 33.1 ºC was recorded.
This situation of persistent high temperature is associated with the marked anticyclonic influence and the presence of a very dry and stable air mass coming from the Sahara, which generates little cloudiness and weak winds.
The meteorological conditions described above, favor the strong solar radiation that falls directly on the earth’s surface, the little ventilation and the scarce occurrence of precipitation; a situation that has persisted during the last days and that favors the marked rise of temperatures during the day.
Something that calls the attention about Pinares de Mayarí is the fact in it is height in Holguín province with cold winters, thus this high temperature record is unprecedented.
