Holguín for exclusive breastfeeding

The health system in the province of Holguín promotes exclusive breastfeeding among pregnant women as part of the actions for the World Week dedicated to this event, which is celebrated every August.

In the northeastern Cuban province of Holguín, activities are carried out in different places like the “8 de Marzo” maternity home located in the capital city and at Vladimir Ilich Lenin Teaching Hospital, awarded the “Friend of Mother and Child” status, ratified in 2017, which recognizes the efforts of that institution in its encouragement.

Dayamí Rodríguez García, a specialist in the area of health promotion, told the Cuban Agency News (ACN for its Spanish acronym) that this procedure is essential for the optimal development of newborns, for which reason its exclusivity is recommended up to six months of age.

He stressed that through educational talks and projection of audiovisual materials, pregnant women are instructed on the appropriate positions for breastfeeding and the ingestion of food that favors the practice.

He stressed that orientation meetings are also held throughout the year, where family planning and care for conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes mellitus, risk factors during pregnancy, are addressed.

Holguín also emphasizes prevention actions to contribute to the reduction of adolescent pregnancy indicators and sexually transmitted infections, protection measures for vulnerable population groups.

The World Breastfeeding Week, held from the 1rst to the 7th of August, had among its objectives to promote laws that facilitate this practice in the workplace, financially reward working mothers and promote harmonious and responsible parenting, according to the Pan American Health Organization.
