The Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC) and the French company Galo Films have signed a contract for the distribution of the feature-length documentary *Mijaín*. The film is dedicated to the first wrestler in Olympic history to win five gold medals, according to reports released this Friday.
An ICAIC press release highlights the contractual agreement that marks the film’s initial steps. Beginning with its official selection for the 43rd edition of the International Festival of Sports Cinema and Television, set to take place in Milan, Italy. Paving the way for its participation in 16 other festivals with similar themes across five continents.
Premiering in 2025 and screened at the Havana International Festival of New Latin American Cinema, the film tells the story of Mijaín López. At the pinnacle of a legendary career, he prepares to face his greatest challenge: winning his fifth Olympic gold medal at Paris 2024.
The documentary closely follows his journey, capturing the rigors of training, the emotions of his team, and memories of his hometown, Herradura, the synopsis notes.
Also through the testimonies of his mother, Leonor Núñez; his coach, Raúl Trujillo; and Mijaín himself. The film reveals not only the undefeated champion but also a humble man shaped by sacrifice and love for his family. It is a story of willpower, legacy, and greatness. He told from the intimate perspective of someone who has defied time through sheer determination, the statement highlights.
The signing ceremony, held virtually, was attended by Rolando Almirante—one of the film’s three directors—and members of the ICAIC executive board, according to a note from the institution.
A co-production between ICAIC and the independent production company D’Alma Films Producciones. The film also benefited from the collaboration of the Cuban Institute of Sports, Physical Education and Recreation (INDER), the Ministry of Information and Social Communication, and the Cuban Ministry of Culture.
