The 34th Holguin International Book Fair will be held from September 4th to 6th. Dedicated to the multi-award-winning writer and journalist Rubén Rodríguez, recipient of the Alejo Carpentier Prize.
According to a press conference, the event will also pay tribute to the centennial of the birth of the historical leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro. Also to the writers Marilyn Bobes and José Bell Lara. It will feature the Russian Federation as the guest country of honor.
The event in the city will feature 28 spaces and pavilions in various cultural institutions throughout the province. With a fairground surrounding Calixto García Park. It will bring together writers, publishers, and artists from various regions of the country.
With an opening gala titled “Remembrances,” a tribute to Russia written and directed by Orestes Saavedra. The program will also include a closing ceremony led by Fermín López Hernández. Featuring references to world history.
Among the publishing offerings will be new releases from Ediciones La Luz. The “With the Scent of Ink” section from Ediciones Holguin, focusing on the work of the honored author. Also the four titles from the La Mezquita imprint. And the presentation of the first volume of Fidel Castro’s Selected Works, by Editorial Alejandro.
The Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) will host the “Witness Memorial” section. Featuring authors such as Emerio Medina, winner of the 2010 Casa de las Américas Prize, explained provincial president Eliel Gómez Martínez.
Moreover the Science Pavilion, located at the La Periquera Provincial History Museum. It will dedicate to the guest country and will include documentary resources on the Russian-speaking community among its initiatives.
The José Martí Cultural Society will dedicate its program to the 65th anniversary of the UNEAC (National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba). And will exhibit works by Cosme Casals Corella, recipient of the National Environmental Prize.
Yaquelín Tapia, provincial director of Culture, highlighted the pride of dedicating this edition to the renowned journalist and writer from Holguin. Whose work appeals to audiences ranging from children to adults and forms part of the province’s cultural heritage.
Sarais Ferrer Morales, president of the Organizing Committee of FILHo 2026 (Holguin International Book Fair). She emphasized that, even in these difficult circumstances for the nation, the public will be offered a worthy event that creates a platform for exchange and interaction.
As background, during the previous Havana edition of the event, Holguin publishing houses had a prominent presence, winning several awards.
Ediciones La Luz added the Puerta de Papel awards to its list of accolades. With the books The Brilliance of the Surface, by Delfín Prats Pupo (2022 National Literature Prize). And The Discontinuous Book, by Lourdes González Herrero (2007 Literary Critics’ Prize). These awards were accepted by poet Luis Yuseff, the publishing house’s director.
For three days, Holguin will once again become a meeting point for authors, readers, and artists. With a program that brings literature and thought to diverse audiences and celebrates the value of literature in Cuban culture.
