The Cuban Telecommunications Company (ETECSA) in the province of Holguin is making steady progress in its transition to renewable energy sources.
With the installation and distribution of a group of solar panels designed according to demanding technical specifications. The company is focusing its efforts on ensuring the continued operation of the cabinets. That support landline telephone service and the Nauta Hogar (home internet) service. To date, the province has seven photovoltaic systems installed and operational. Distributed across four locations in the provincial capital, two in the municipality of Mayari, and one in Moa.
These modules are designed to charge the batteries of the cabinets where they are installed. Allowing service to continue even after periods of low sunlight. Autonomy in such circumstances depends on battery performance and user traffic in the area. Given that higher demand implies higher energy consumption. Although a battery in optimal condition can operate for three to four hours. There are cases where the storage capacity has gradually decreased.
Aware of the strategic value of telecommunications for everyday life and the local economy. Specialists acknowledge that this initial delivery does not cover the entire energy demand. Nevertheless, the company reaffirms its commitment to progressively increasing the use of clean energy throughout the year. Which is a pressing priority given the current fuel shortage for electricity generation.
Currently, efforts are focused on installing photovoltaic systems at radio base stations across Holguin province. Of the 31 systems assigned to the territorial division, 14 have already been installed. Also 11 of which have the complete technology. The rigorous planning and commissioning phase began on August 17th.
The strategy also includes a third phase of work focused on incorporating photovoltaics into the telecommunications centers of the municipal capitals. This step aims to support fixed-line and mobile telephone services. As well as general connectivity, throughout the province.
Moreover this shift towards renewable energy sources has been made possible thanks to the ongoing collaboration. And the support of the community, state-owned enterprises, and non-state management entities. However, the effectiveness of the installation process remains dependent on the technical availability of suppliers. With the size of the physical space suitable for the safe assembly of the solar structures.
