Holguin Municipality of Baguanos Benefits from Solar Energy

The Los Cocos photovoltaic solar park, located in the Holguin municipality of Baguanos, has been in stable operation since July 4th. Contributing clean energy to the National Electric System (SEN) as part of Cuba’s efforts to transform its energy matrix.

The facility, whose construction began in November 2025. It was synchronized for the first time on July 4th, 2026. Although it is not yet fully completed, it is generating electricity reliably.

In statements to the Cuban News Agency, Luis Enrique Toledano Sánchez, head of the park, explained that the installation has a projected capacity of 5 megawatts (MW) and 1 MW of battery storage.

Also the maximum contribution they have achieved is 4.9 MW. As the park still has some unfinished structures and is not yet operating at its full potential, Toledano Sánchez pointed out. He added that currently, depending on weather conditions, the contribution is between 3.5 and 3.9 MW.

This park is composed of several technological components: primary, secondary, an SVG regulator. A charger or PCS (Power Conversion System), and a battery bank that stabilizes generation in the face of fluctuations in solar radiation.

When weather conditions do not permit it, energy is injected. From a reserve to maintain generation stability, the specialist explained. A particular characteristic of the system is that, to generate power, it needs to be synchronized with the national grid.

The park generates current but does not regulate frequency. So it needs a power source, either internal batteries or the national grid. This park provides feedback, Toledano Sánchez clarified.

Currently, the park directly benefits the communities located upstream from its connection point. Including La Represa, Baguanos 2, La Esperanza, and provides electricity to institutions in downtown Baguanos. Such as the bank, Etecsa (the telecommunications company), the bakery/confectionery shop, and the hospital.

“With the inverters and batteries operational, we can provide electricity to Baguanos all day long. And feed into the National Electric System (SEN) with the required megawatts.” Stated the park manager, specifying that the area extends from Cantarran to the town square and the hospital.

The Los Cocos solar park was initially planned for the municipality of Banes. But due to disagreements regarding the land’s location, it was relocated to Baguanos, where land had been available for over two years.

Finally the commissioning of the Los Cocos solar park is part of a national strategy to install photovoltaic solar parks with a total capacity of 2,000 MW. As part of the policy to transform the energy matrix and reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
