The landscape of Higher Education in northeastern Cuba is consolidating its social and economic impact. With the official formation of the teams that will compete in the CreLab 2026 Circular Hackathon.
This initiative, conceived within the InnoLabs Project at the University of Holguin. It emerges as a dynamic space where academia connects directly with the urgent needs of production and services.
Under the premise of promoting engineering capable of transforming waste into viable alternatives. The competition seeks to stimulate young talent for the sustainable development of the region.
Moreover the competition brings together students from the Industrial, Mechanical, Computer, and Civil Engineering programs. Who will contribute a multidisciplinary perspective to solve highly complex problems.
Future professionals will organize themselves into work teams. With the goal of structuring creative, viable, and technologically efficient solutions to challenges in the real-world production environment.
This combination of expertise ensures that the proposals not only address isolated technical criteria. Also integrate process management, structural design, digitalization, and economic and environmental feasibility analysis.
The event formally launching this scientific conference was supported by the highest authorities of the Holguin university and leading scientists in the region.
Present were Dr. Marisol Pérez Campaña, Vice-Rector of the institution and principal coordinator of InnoLabs. Also Dr. Leudis Orlando Vega de la Cruz, also Vice-Rector of the university.
The deans of the Faculties of Engineering, Industrial Engineering, and Computer Science-Mathematics. Along with members of the organizing project’s executive committee, joined the delegation. They all agreed on the importance of integrating university capabilities into the Cuban business sector.
Furthermore to ensure that the ideas generated transcend the classroom and become applicable solutions, the CreLab Circular Hackathon 2026 is being developed through a high-value strategic alliance model.
This edition highlights the direct link with the Medano Company and the Holguin Science and Technology Park. Some institutions that serve as both recipients and facilitators of knowledge.
This partnership also benefits from the guidance of the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Postgraduate Studies at the University of Holguin. Which assumes the responsibility of methodologically guiding the projects toward the quality standards demanded by the circular economy in the country.
Also the implementation of this competition reaffirms the leading role of the InnoLabs Project in modernizing the educational and community engagement processes at the University of Holguin.
With initiatives of this magnitude, the institution not only enhances its students’ preparedness for creative challenges but also firmly establishes itself as a national leader in innovation and sustainability.
The event promises to set a significant precedent in how university knowledge becomes a public tool for collective well-being and environmental stewardship in Cuba.
