The renowned storytelling company Words to the Wind invites the Holguin public to the highly anticipated premiere of the play “Cuando un hijo se va” (When a Child Leaves). A theatrical work of profound human and social sensitivity. Under the artistic and general direction of the acclaimed creator Fermín López Hernández.
The premiere performances will take place on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th of this month, at 10:00 a.m. The performances will be held at “A good word,” the group’s new official headquarters. Located on Pepe Torres Street, between Frexes and Aguilera, in the city of Holguin.
Written a year ago by Fermín López himself, “When a Child Leaves” is a moving tribute to mothers who experience the departure of their children. Those who hold onto the hope of return and those who endure the passage of time with a table set.
The staging draws conceptual and dramatic references from great classics of world theater. Such as Federico García Lorca’s “Yerma” and Bertolt Brecht’s “Mother Courage and Her Children.” It also incorporates, in a way that closely reflects local identity, the figure of Lucía Íñiguez Landín. Mother of Major General Calixto García and an icon of history and patriotism in Holguin.
Also the play had a successful preview last March in the lobby of the José Martí Cultural and Cinematographic Complex. Where it also served as a graduation project for theater student Andrea Suárez. Deeply moved the audience with the relevance and humanity of its themes in the current Cuban context.
Founded on April 14th, 2004—initially as the Oral Storytelling Front of the Holguin Dramatic Theater. The Words to the Wind Company has spent over two decades. Fusing theater, music, and oral tradition for audiences of all ages.
Directed by López Hernández (recipient of the Alberto Dávalos Distinction Award and named an Illustrious Son of the City). The group enjoys immense national and international prestige.
Among its many accolades are the Holguin City Awards, the Contarte Award for artistic career achievement, and the Honorary Minstrel Award. Also the highest honor bestowed by the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC) in this field.
With this premiere, Words to the Wind reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the social fabric, the preservation of cultural heritage, and cutting-edge artistic creation in northeastern Cuba.
