Holguin Journalist Speaks of Raúl from a Close Perspective

During a work trip, Raúl Castro stopped, asked to have his picture taken with the press team. In a gesture, tenderly placed his cap on Magalys Pupo Leyva. A scene the retired journalist cherishes as one of the most endearing memories of her professional career.

During that period of her life, Pupo Leyva was able to perceive firsthand the character of the Army General. Whom she describes as a man close to the workers, soldiers, women, and combatants. In contrast to perceptions that label him as harsh.

The journalist highlighted her participation in editing news materials during one of the several trips to eastern Cuba. Also where the revolutionary leader praised the warmth of her voice in the television reports.

As part of that coverage, on one occasion the press team stayed for several days at a guesthouse. Moreover where Raúl shared meals with the journalists in an atmosphere of simplicity and camaraderie.

The reporter recounted that behind the olive-green uniform lives a person of extreme simplicity. Therefore who adopted that uniform as his own from a very young age for the definitive liberation of Cuba.

In a pleasant conversation today, she affirms that Raúl is a man open to dialogue and conversation, who does not inhibit others in their work.

This intimate portrait takes on added significance amidst the recent accusations from the U.S. government. Which Pupo Leyva considers a failed attempt to erase decades of revolutionary history.

Magalys Pupo remembers him as respectful to everyone who approached him. Always willing to offer guidance without imposing his own opinion. Capable of genuine, natural laughter, and above all, an exceptional being who, at 95, continues to shine with the same humanity under the four stars on his epaulette.
