Research has shown that a person exercising to their favorite music can increase their endurance by almost 20 percent. Without the physical activity becoming extremely exhausting.
According to the journal Psychology of Sport & Exercise, this discovery has practical benefits for athletes and those who exercise regularly.
Participants in the study who cycled to the rhythm of their own songs registered between 120 and 140 beats per minute. And lasted, on average, almost six minutes longer before becoming exhausted. Compared to those who exercised in silence, the scientists noted.
“The music you choose yourself doesn’t change your fitness level or make your heart work much harder at that moment. It simply helps you tolerate sustained effort for longer,” the researchers argued.
Moreover they argue that favorite music can be a simple and free tool that allows individuals to push themselves harder during workouts. Without feeling like they’re making an extra effort at the end.
“Our research shows that allowing people to choose their own motivating songs can help them accumulate more quality workout time. Also which could translate into better fitness results. Greater adherence to the exercise plan, and possibly more people staying active,” the scientists pointed out.
