After days of searching at sea, the two remaining vessels of the Our America Convoy completed their journey in the Port of Havana. Accompanied by a ship from the Mexican Navy.
The ships, identified as Friendship and Tiger Moth, were located this Saturday by a Mexican aircraft about 80 nautical miles northwest of the capital. According to information provided by the Mexican Navy in a statement.
Both vessels had set sail on March 20th from Isla Mujeres. In the southern Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Carrying aid for Cuba, and were scheduled to arrive between March 24th and 25th.
Following the loss of communications. Cuban and Mexican maritime authorities activated a joint search and rescue operation.
To assist with the rescue efforts, two ambulances from the Integrated Medical Emergency System (SIUM) of the Cuban Ministry of Public Health (MINSAP). They were deployed to the port of Havana to ensure the crew members’ well-being.
Heroes of the Republic of Cuba, Gerardo Hernández Nordelo, president of the Councils for the Defense of the Revolution. And Fernando González Llort, president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples, participated in the welcoming ceremony.
Diplomatic personnel from various embassies also joined the gathering of their compatriots. The crew of both vessels totaled nine people: one German, one Dutch, two Americans, and five French citizens, including a four-year-old girl.
In greeting the young sailors, Gerardo Hernández Nordelo stated, “Those who wish us all kinds of harm were hoping for a catastrophe to happen. So they could blame Cuba… But you are here, and once again we say, thank you very much!”
The Cuban hero expressed that more and more people will understand the feelings of Cubans. Reaffirmed that Cubans decided their own destiny in 1959 and will continue to defend that right.
