Cuba prioritizes respect and care for older adults

The Cuban political agenda continues to prioritize respect and care of older adults. Particularly as the country currently has the highest aging rate in Latin America and the Caribbean.

Older adults in Cuba are considered invaluable sources of knowledge and experience. They can contribute to peace, sustainable development, and the protection of the planet.

October 1st marks the International Day of Older Persons. An observance aimed at raising awareness about the issues and challenges facing older adults. Ensuring the full realization of their fundamental freedoms, while emphasizing their inclusion and active participation in society.

To this end, the Council of Ministers of Cuba adopted Decree 139 last year. Establishing a national observance for the International Day of Older Persons.

Cuba integrates this observance into its public policies and demographic context.

According to the Official Gazette, the commemorative period runs from the last week of September through October 1st each year. Under the slogan “Celebrating life, honoring experience.”

The general objective of this celebration is to honor, encourage, and recognize the contributions of older adults.

Also the events aim to foster habits and lifestyles that promote active and healthy aging. While also promoting a positive image of this demographic by highlighting their capacity to make valuable, active contributions to society.

Recreational, cultural, and sports activities are planned across various settings. Including communities, “older adult education programs,” cultural centers, day centers for the elderly, nursing homes, psycho-pedagogical centers, hospitals, and polyclinics, with a special focus on geriatric services.

Cultural, sports, and recreational events held on the day for people aged 70 and older will offer free admission. They will be able to purchase products at special prices at commercial and agricultural fairs.

State-owned enterprises and the non-state sector must provide special attention to nursing homes, seniors’ clubs, and the Family Care System. In coordination with the Ministry of Domestic Trade and with the participation of social workers.
