On the night of September 29th, Yaneisi Peña Escobar, a 37-year-old resident of 3rd Street No. 51 (upper floor), between 12th and 14th Streets, in the Ramón Quintana neighborhood of Holguin, was admitted to the Emergency Intensive Care Unit of the Vladimir Ilich Lenin Provincial General Hospital.
It was reported that she worked as a domestic helper at a nearby home where cured meat products were processed. It is unknown how she obtained the sodium nitrate from that location. Also she used it to prepare a meal that she, her mother, and her stepfather subsequently consumed.
Yaneisi began experiencing sweating and convulsions. She arrived at the hospital in a coma requiring mechanical ventilation and was immediately transferred to the intensive care unit.
As of midday today, she is awake, conscious, and cooperative, and has been taken off the ventilator. She remains in critical condition while undergoing intensive treatment.
Her mother, Clara Suárez Rodríguez (63), began experiencing vagal symptoms. Following a doctor’s recommendation, she was taken to the hospital along with the stepfather, Manuel Fernández Fernández (65).
They were admitted to the same hospital’s Emergency Intensive Care Unit suffering from severe neurological deterioration and a rapidly worsening condition. Despite receiving immediate medical attention and undergoing resuscitation efforts, both passed away due to severe pulmonary edema.
We deeply regret these tragic, preventable losses and share in the grief of their family and friends.
The provincial health system, together with joint forces from the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), is continuing the investigation to clarify all the details.
