Mukhtaba Khamenei, the second son of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on the first day of the massive bombing campaign by Washington and Tel Aviv against Tehran. He has been chosen as his successor, becoming the country’s new supreme leader.
Khamenei, 56, will have the final say in all matters of state. And will also serve as commander-in-chief of the Iranian Armed Forces and the Revolutionary Guard Corps. To which his father granted more power during his nearly 47-year rule.
Election
The outlines of the complex succession process began to take shape the morning after Khamenei’s death. As stipulated by the Iranian Constitution, the Islamic Republic formed a council on Sunday to assume leadership functions and govern the country.
Also the council is composed of Iran’s president, Masoud Pezeshkian. The head of the country’s judiciary, Gholamhossein Mohseni Ejei. And a member of the Guardian Council chosen by Iran’s Expediency Discernment Council. Which advises the supreme leader and resolves disputes with Parliament.
While the council was tasked with governing the country on an interim basis. The responsibility for choosing a new supreme leader as soon as possible fell to the Assembly of Experts. An 88-member panel composed entirely of Shia clerics elected by popular vote every eight years. Whose nominations are approved by the Guardian Council, Iran’s constitutional supervisory body.
Aggression against Iran
- Israel and the United States launched a joint attack in the early hours of Saturday, February 28th.With the stated objective of “eliminating threats” from the Islamic Republic of Iran.
The attacks claimed the lives of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and several high-ranking military officials.
