Considered one of the leading causes of death worldwide, cancer affects most countries today. Hence the need to curb this disease, which affects both sexes and people of all ages.
On the occasion of World Cancer Day, a day dedicated to prevention every February 4th. The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) are calling for everyone to be “United for One.”
This campaign theme, in effect since 2025, puts people at the center of attention. Because cancer affects millions of lives in countless ways. But it does not define who we are. We are more than a disease, more than a statistic, and more than a number or a diagnosis, the statement for the day emphasizes.
Every experience with cancer is unique, and it will be necessary for all of us, united. To create a world in which we look beyond the disease and see the person before the patient. Only in this way can we rewrite the future of cancer care. A future where the needs of individuals and communities come first.
Cancer is a disease that causes a group of cells in the body to grow abnormally and uncontrollably, resulting in a lump or mass. This occurs in all cancers except leukemia (blood cancer), the text reminds us.
If left untreated, the tumor usually invades surrounding tissue and can metastasize to distant parts of the body. Spreading to other organs and tissues, it emphasizes.
It is estimated that approximately one in two men and one in three women will develop cancer at some point in their lives. More than 14 million new cases are diagnosed worldwide each year, and the disease causes 9.6 million deaths annually.
Specialists explain that there are many types of cancer that a person can develop, due to a variety of causes. In many cases, risk factors cannot be modified, but about a third of cancer cases can be prevented by reducing the main risk factors.
Non-modifiable risk factors include age and genetics. But those we can control include. Among others: alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. Also diet; physical activity and exercise. Exposure to carcinogens; and certain infections.
