Lucía Íñiguez, a heart that beats in the women of Holguin

Every December 8th, Holguin not only remembers but also revives one of its most emblematic daughters: Lucía Íñiguez Landín. Her birthday transcends the mere commemoration. Becoming a living mirror reflecting the Cuban woman of today. Her legacy is not a relic of the past, but the moral compass that guides the present.

The courage that led her to save her son Nicolás by dressing him as a woman in front of the enemy. Or to proclaim with unparalleled pride, “That is my son, dead before surrendering,” is the same thread that today weaves the resistance and commitment of Cuban women.

In present-day Holguin, her spirit lives on in the quiet, unwavering work of teachers, doctors, scientists, agricultural workers, and leaders. Women who face daily challenges with the same fortitude and dignity that characterized the patriot.

The “Book of Honor”: A Living Pact with History

This commitment has been ritualized each year since 1997 in the civic ceremony of the “Lucías of Today” Book of Honor. Outstanding women from Holguin in health, production, education, and defense sign its pages. Subscribing to a personal and collective pact with the principles that Lucía defended.

Also this tradition, supported by the Federation of Cuban Women, the Communist Party of Cuba, and the local government, demonstrates how her legacy is institutionalized and multiplied. By honoring the “contemporary Lucías,” it is affirmed that patriotism is a current attitude. Expressed in daily service to society and the Revolution.

Remembering Lucía Íñiguez is, above all, a responsibility to the future. Her life is an indispensable educational resource for instilling in new generations the values of independence, unwavering dignity, and love for the country.

May her example continue to be, today and always, the seed from which the noblest actions of our society spring. Because in every woman from Holguin who perseveres, creates, and defends what is hers, beats that indomitable heart that knew no surrender.
