A call to civic responsibility to safeguard cultural heritage in Holguin

In a recent act of civic duty, a group of young people from the Martí Youth Movement, passersby, and residents of the emblematic Loma de la Cruz in Holguin joined together to return the cannon to its place. Unfortunately, it had been thrown down the stairs by individuals lacking awareness and civic education.

This gesture not only reflects a deep respect for the community’s cultural heritage but also highlights the importance of collective responsibility in preserving our public spaces. However, this incident brings to light a recurring problem in the city. Acts of vandalism and a lack of respect for public property.

Acts like this are repeated time and again in parks and other public places. Raising a troubling question: who will put a stop to these irresponsible actions? Which individuals or institutions should ensure that these incidents do not occur, or, if they do, implement the appropriate measures?

It is crucial to recognize that, despite the inappropriate behavior that some, largely young people, may exhibit. There are still those who act responsibly and demonstrate a genuine commitment to their community.

Young people like those who returned the canyon at Loma de la Cruz to its original location are role models. Their conduct should be promoted and supported, as civic education and the fostering of values such as respect and responsibility are essential for cultivating an active and conscious citizenry.

Local institutions, in collaboration with the community, have the responsibility to create programs that not only inform about the importance of heritage preservation. But also encourage active citizen participation in protecting their spaces.

Furthermore, promoting awareness campaigns and community activities can be an effective way to involve the population in caring for what belongs to everyone. But most importantly, education begins at home, as our grandparents so often said. And with all the wisdom of their years of experience, they were right.

The incident at Loma de la Cruz is a reminder that, although challenges exist in our society. There is still hope in the positive actions of many. Also much remains to be done to correct the actions of others.

It is time to join forces to foster an environment where respect and civic responsibility are the norm. Where every citizen feels motivated to care for their community. Where the laws are applied with the established rigor to safeguard our heritage and the common environment.
