Plaza de la Marqueta: Where History and Development Intertwine

In the heart of Holguin, Plaza de la Marqueta stands as a living testament to our city’s capacity for rebirth.

This space, which for years was the city’s main commercial center, has transformed itself into one of the most dynamic and beloved places for Holguin residents. Its origins date back to May 19th, 1848, when, under the name Plaza O’Donnell. It began operating as the city’s main market.

For decades, among its wooden and tiled stalls, the people of Holguin did their daily shopping for groceries and other essential products.

The 20th century brought significant transformations. In 1918, the Mercado Modelo (Model Market) was inaugurated. A more solid building designed to meet the needs of a growing city. With its brick walls and steel truss roofs, this new space represented a significant leap forward in commercial opportunities for the local population.

However, the true rebirth came between 2014 and 2017, when a thorough restoration returned this emblematic place to its former glory. An investment of millions of pesos transformed what was once a dilapidated space into the vibrant cultural complex we know today.

Under the leadership of Lizandra Lafuente González, the Plaza de la Marqueta local development project has become a national example of public-private partnerships.

Currently, the complex boasts 37 stalls that provide employment for more than 70 workers. 90% of whom are women, demonstrating the leading role of women from Holguin in local economic development.

The plaza has become an essential platform for local visual artists, craftspeople, and textile designers. Who find here not only a space to exhibit their work but also to sell it, thus completing the art production cycle. This local development project is distinguished by offering permanent cultural spaces. Also where provincial and national artists regularly perform.

Likewise, La Marqueta has considered the youngest members of the community. With spaces specially dedicated for children to participate in cultural activities and connect with Holguin’s traditions from an early age. This initiative strengthens the training of new generations of artists and creators.

Institutions such as Artex, EGREM, and agencies of the Ministry of Tourism have established a presence in the plaza. Contributing to the diversification of offerings and the strengthening of the local economy.
During events such as the Book Fair or the Romerías de Mayo (May Pilgrimages), its economic impact multiplies. Benefiting not only businesses within the plaza but also those in the surrounding area.

But beyond the numbers, La Marqueta embodies the entrepreneurial and cultural spirit that characterizes the people of Holguin. It’s the place where grandparents take their grandchildren to show them traditions. Also where young artists find their first stage, where entire families enjoy a cultural evening.

This space, which witnessed clandestine struggles during the 26th of July Movement, has now become a bastion of Holguin’s cultural and economic development. Its evolution demonstrates that it’s possible to preserve historical memory while building new paths for our city’s progress.

Plaza de la Marqueta continues to write its history. Now with the sounds of trova music, the murmur of visitors, and the bustle of a people who have made this space their own symbol of identity and resilience.
