A landslide triggered by the heavy rains from Hurricane Melissa has completely blocked traffic on the Moa-Baracoa highway. About 15 kilometers from this mining city, Civil Defense reported on its official Facebook page.
As a result of the landslide, several communities in the municipality of Moa were cut off. Including Punta Gorda, Quemado del Negro, Cañete, Cupey, Cayo Grande de Yamanigüey, and Yamanigüey. As well as the municipality of Baracoa in Guantanamo province.
Local authorities immediately went to the site and ordered urgent action. To construct a temporary detour to restore traffic as quickly as possible.
Drivers were warned that, for the time being, it is not possible to travel in either direction on the affected section of the road. Monitoring of recovery efforts will continue in the coming days until land communication between Moa and Baracoa is restored.
Hurricane Melissa, during its passage through Holguin, caused damage to economic and social infrastructure in several areas and municipalities of this northeastern Cuban province.
Flooding in several territories, such as Cueto, Sagua de Tanamo, and Urbano Noris, caused significant damage.
