Cuban President Arrives in Holguin, Battered by Hurricane Melissa

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel arrived today in Holguin province. Which was struck just 24 hours ago by Melissa. A powerful hurricane that caused considerable damage in this region of the country.

According to the Cuban Presidency, the president is accompanied by the Secretary of Organization of the Communist Party, Roberto Morales. Also with the province’s top officials: the president and vice president of the Provincial Defense Council, Yoel Queipo and Manuel Hernández, respectively.

Díaz-Canel is touring areas damaged by the tropical cyclone, which hit the province as a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

During his visit, the Cuban president is checking on the condition of the photovoltaic solar parks (PSFV) infrastructure. The evacuation centers, and disaster relief efforts while touring some of these sites.

During a visit to the Providencia Solar Power Plant (PSFV Providencia), located near the Frank País International Airport in the provincial capital. Díaz-Canel acknowledged the efforts of workers in the sector to safeguard the Felton Thermoelectric Power Plant and the solar installations. Moreover which sustained no appreciable damage and are vital for reinforcing the National Electric System.

The previous day, on the television program Mesa Redonda, Díaz-Canel reaffirmed the Government’s full support for the provinces affected by Hurricane Melissa and urged everyone to remain vigilant.

He also recognized the efforts deployed to protect the population and emphasized that the absence of fatalities in eastern Cuba was a result of the “participation, organization, and adherence to the instructions” of the Civil Defense system.

However, he warned that risks persist from the secondary effects of the storm. Such as lingering winds, soil saturation, river flooding, bridge collapses, disruption of basic services. Potential outbreaks of disease due to contaminated water sources.
