As every July 24th since 1979, the people of Moa have one more reason to celebrate: their flagship station, The Voice of Nickel, celebrates 46 years on the air, established not only as a means of communication, but as a symbol of identity for this mining community.
From its first broadcasts, the station made a clear commitment: to inform, guide, educate, and entertain, and it has more than fulfilled it. Its programming, running 18 hours a day, has accompanied entire generations, from those who tuned in on shortwave radios to those who listen to it today on digital platforms.
On this anniversary, our fondest memory goes to the pioneers who gave life to the station. Some are no longer with us physically, others are enjoying retirement or living far from Moa, but their mark lives on in every note, every interview, every song that marked an era.
Without their dedication, we wouldn’t be what we are today. A special hug to those who trained here and continue to make radio programs. The Voice of Nickel is also a tribute to collective effort: from the technicians who secure the signal to the young people who are innovating with new formats today, everyone has contributed their part.
But the true protagonist of this story is the listener, the one who wakes up to the morning news, who follows the live baseball games, who sings along to the songs played on the radio, who calls and talks on the station that is also theirs, or who finds solace in the community service messages.
For them, it’s not just a radio station; it’s their companion in the kitchen, in the workshop, on the way to work, on the truck or backhoe in the mining area, at the nickel plant, or at sea while the fishermen sail.
With a revamped lineup, but without losing its essence, La Portadora del Mensaje—as it is also known—faces the challenges of the digital age (www.lavozdelniquel.icrt.cu) without forgetting its local roots. Today, as it blows out its 46 candles, its team urges you to stay tuned, because we will always be there for you.
