Cuba Commits Regional Cooperation in Social Security

Community-based solutions and inclusive policies are key today to reducing inequalities. Affirmed Cuba’s Minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Martha Elena Feitó.

According to the head of the sector, local good practices, along with regional cooperation, contribute to protecting workers’ rights in a context of significant demographic changes.

During the closing ceremony of the Continental Meeting of Good Practices on Demographic Dynamics and its Relationship with Social Security. Feitó urged the implementation of innovative reforms in pension systems to ensure their equity and financial sustainability.

The event, held on July 10th and 11th in Havana, was attended by Pedro Kumamoto, General Secretary of the Inter-American Conference on Social Security (CISS). Teresa Amarelle, the highest representative of the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC); and Latin American experts on population and social protection issues.

Sponsored by the CISS, the MTSS, and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). The forum fostered debate on population aging, migration, fertility rates, and youth employment, among other phenomena.

Through a videoconference with speakers from both Mexico and several countries in the region. The minister noted that challenges to the sustainability of social protection systems were analyzed. These require intersectoral policies that integrate health, education, and employment.

These policies must incorporate gender approaches to respond to the demands of vulnerable populations, such as young people and older adults. Feitó explained that she presented aspects of an action plan reached after the debate.

In this regard, attendees advocated for strengthening alliances between governments, international organizations, and civil society. Promoting legal frameworks that adapt social security systems to demographic realities. Encouraging investment in data, statistics, and research to design evidence-based policies.

The head of the Ministry of Social Security (MTSS) previously held a meeting with the General Secretary of the CISS. In which they highlighted the historical ties between Cuba and that regional organization. As well as their mutual interest in increasing cooperation.
