Mijaín Recognized as Best Male Athlete in the Americas

Cuban Greco-Roman wrestling legend Mijaín López will receive the prestigious 2024 Best Male Athlete in the Americas award today. Presented by the Continental Section of the International Sports Press Association (AIPS).

The ceremony will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the headquarters of the Union of Cuban Journalists (UPEC). Also the trophy will be personally presented by Carlos Julio Castellanos, president of AIPS America. Who traveled from Bogota, Colombia, for the ceremony.

The event will also recognize the outstanding work of Cuban sports journalists to coincide with World Sports Journalist Day.

Osvaldo Vento Montiller, president of the National Institute of Sports, Physical Education, and Recreation (Inder), and Ricardo Ronquillo, president of UPEC, confirmed their attendance.

López, a native of the municipality of Herradura in the western province of Pinar del Rio. Became the first athlete in Olympic history to win five consecutive gold medals in the same individual event after his triumph at the Paris 2024 Games.

The Herradura Giant obtained the majority of votes—seven to two for his closest rival—in the AIPS survey. Moreover includes sports associations from 11 countries.
