The Engineering Construction Company 17 (INGECO) is promoting the implementation of the Women‘s Advancement Program in the sector. By creating opportunities for professional advancement, improving working conditions, and promoting gender equality.
With a workforce of more than 500 women working as operators, bricklayers, and engineers. As well as various levels of responsibility, including executives, reserves, and quarries. The entity is implementing a series of measures aimed at empowering female workers. Yisel Tamayo Yopiz, the institution’s technical director, explained to CNA.
Among the actions implemented is postgraduate training through the provision of master’s degrees at the company’s facilities. Also known as ECOI-17, where there was a significant representation of women from the collective. A fact made possible by the existing ties with the University of Holguin.
Xiomara Infantes Solórzano, a laureate at the National Forum of Science and Technology, noted that they also encourage women’s participation and leadership in projects and hold Creative Women events.
Some women hold executive positions in the National Union of Architects and Construction Engineers of Cuba. She also highlighted the provision of transportation to facilitate travel to work centers and locations, and the subsequent funding of a theoretical and practical preparation course for obtaining licenses in collaboration with the School of Road Safety and Driving Education.
They also prioritize healthcare by conducting regular medical checkups aimed at early detection of illnesses and establishing special committees focused on helping pregnant and sick women. Offering teleworking as a flexible alternative for balancing work and family responsibilities. Infantes noted that other initiatives developed include training on rights and legal protection against violence, and the creation of interest groups. Jointly with primary and secondary educational institutions. Dedicated to vocational training with a gender perspective.
Tamayo added that the action plan includes the creation of a children’s playhouse to support working mothers who have not obtained places in daycare centers. An effort for which they have begun preparations to find space and invest.
Founded in 1976, ECOI-17 has the social mandate to execute, repair, and maintain engineering projects, tasks in which women play a fundamental role, exemplified by their active contribution to the construction of the La Corúa solar park, located in the Holguin municipality of Mayari.
