Cuba with notable achievements in defense of women’s rights

Cuba celebrates International Women’s Day today with concrete advances in its State policy for the advancement of women, which seeks to empower this population group and ensure greater participation in society.

According to data published by the Federation of Cuban Women and other civil society organizations, women occupy 49 percent of the country’s parliamentary seats, making it the fourth nation in the world with the highest representation in the legislative branch.

It also highlights the election of women presidents of government in 10 of the 15 provinces, as well as a large presence of women in sectors such as health, education and justice, among others.

According to evaluations by the Cuban parliament’s Commission for Attention to Youth, Children and Equal Rights for Women, the rate of female economic activity exceeds 52 percent and 46 percent are employed in the state sector and 24 percent in the non-state sector.

In rural areas, women represent 20.32 percent of the total of those integrated into the National Association of Small Farmers, and it is found that more than 16,900 work the land through various agricultural and livestock modalities.

The Caribbean island’s achievements in terms of gender equality and women’s empowerment have been benchmarks for various UN bodies, two decades after the Beijing Declaration on this fundamental human right.

In 1995, the Caribbean country arrived at the meeting in the Chinese capital with many of the goals achieved, including access to health, education, decent employment, equal pay for men for the same work, as well as full social and reproductive rights.

This is the result of the policy promoted by the Cuban Revolution since 1959 and climbed the ladder with the approval, in March 2021, of the National Program for the Advancement of Women (PAM in the Spanish acronym). Through Presidential Decree 198/202, the PAM constitutes the agenda of the Cuban State for this purpose and integrates in a single document the actions and measures to achieve it.

The defense of women constitutes a historical legacy and traditions of struggle, promoted by the National Hero, José Martí, and the historical leader of the revolutionary process, Fidel Castro.
