President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudez today visited the coastal municipality of Pilón, in the eastern Cuban province of Granma, rattled by earthquakes over the weekend that caused damage to buildings and services for the population.
In this territory, the most affected by the recent earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 and 6.8 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, the president of the National Defense Council also noted the magnitude of the damage, the recovery, the support and solidarity toward the inhabitants.
Díaz-Canel spoke with the population from the community of Sevilla, and was interested in the mood and psychological state of the people, and recognized the organization and discipline with which they faced this event.
Díaz-Canel visits earthquake-struck territories in eastern Cuba
He asked about the recovery phase, since in the area of Sevilla alone, more than 400 homes were damaged, the Presidency reported on social network X.
After listening to the neighbors, he conveyed confidence and was interested in the work being done in the processing office to speed up the process of recovering properties.
He insisted on the importance of the lessons learned from this experience, to continue preparing ourselves for phenomena of this nature.
Predident Diaz-Canel visits Santiago de Cuba
National Defense Council President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermudez on Thursday visited the Geodynamic Observatory of the National Center for Seismological Research, where he inquired with its specialists about possible seismic threats to the country.
Díaz-Canel recalled that the institution was Commander-in-Chief Fidel Castro’s idea, and received a detailed explanation on how the scientific center that monitors and studies seismic activity in Cuba and the Caribbean works. In this institution, he stressed the importance of maintaining constant communication with the people and authorities, especially where last Sunday’s earthquakes were recorded with greater intensity.
Later, Díaz-Canel, who is also the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC), visited the “Cuqui Bosh” sports complex in this city, where the Provincial Defense Council would be located in case of an earthquake.
He also visited the “Juan de la Cruz Martínez Maceira” Northern Children’s Hospital, one of the health institutions where structural work is being done to revive its services, where he learned that it had only had superficial damage.
The National Defense Council president was accompanied by the secretary of Organization of the PCC Central Committee, Roberto Morales Ojeda; and Beatriz Johnson Urrutia – the first secretary of the PCC Provincial Committee in the eastern province of Santiago de Cuba.
