On October 17 and 18, the city of Holguin will host the First National Symposium on Rural Nursing, dedicated to highlighting the work of these personnel in hard-to-reach mountain areas under Cuban State’s Plan Turquino.
Elizabeth Chacón, head of the Nursing section of the General Directorate of Public Health, told the ACN that the meeting will focus on the exchange of experiences of the modes of action in the clinics of these geographical areas located in mountainous regions of the country.
She said that the meeting will present the results of work in the follow-up of vulnerable populations, vaccination programs, control of adolescent pregnancy, family planning consultations, among other prioritized fronts of the sector.
Life stories of nurses who act as doctors and play a fundamental role in the communities, especially in the face of meteorological phenomena that cause heavy rains and floods, will also be shared.
The event, in which experts from several provinces will participate, has among its objectives to contribute to improving the quality of life and health indicators of the population, the directive highlighted.
The Turquino-Manatí Plan is a comprehensive program created at the initiative of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, aimed at guaranteeing health, education and professional improvement in remote areas of the country, where about 12 percent of the population lives, and covers 54 municipalities in 11 provinces, mainly in the eastern part of the country.
