Agriculture in the Cuban province of Holguin is intruding on studies to reach new seeds, with the goal of facing climate change and foster resilience to the variations caused by this phenomenon.
These lines are intended to be planted in mountains and selected production polygons, where it is possible to evaluate their yield and adaptation to high temperatures and intense drought, among other parameters.
Robert Manuel Leyva Martínez, specialist of the Agricultural Extension, Research and Training Unit (Ueica) in this northeastern territory, said that in crops such as chili bell pepper, eggplant and banana, work is being done to develop new varieties, taking into account soil conditions.
He pointed out that innovative techniques are also being tested, focused on water saving, by reducing the space between one plant and another, planting squash and yams in mounds, and covering as much land as possible, with short-cycle varieties.
New seed studies are underway in Holguín
These alternatives are being applied in territories such as Banes, Urbano Noris and Gibara, which also benefited from the collaboration of the international projects Ecovalor and Gibara Green x Percent to contribute to local self-sufficiency and the incorporation of innovative technologies.
The Ueica research center is also working to promote the Sustainable Development Program until 2030, which includes research lines such as phytogenetic research; seed production, conservation and management; phytotechnologies seed production; integrated crop phytotechnologies, animal feed and biotic factors that influence agriculture.
With more than 30 years of work in the province, Ueica research center has specialized departments that cover different agricultural and livestock areas, with a staff of
competent professionals who also teach in the universities, thus strengthening practical links with academia.
